How Edgard Corona Built Latin America’s Fitness Giant from a Single Gym

Before Smart Fit became a household name across Latin America, Edgard Corona ran a single upscale gym in São Paulo. The journey from that first Bio Ritmo location in 1996 to commanding a fitness empire of 1,500+ locations illustrates how a chemical engineer transformed an entire industry through a simple insight: quality fitness should be accessible to everyone.

Corona’s path to fitness entrepreneurship began unexpectedly. After working 14 years at his family’s sugar mill in Ribeirão Preto, he faced internal family business disputes that prompted a career change. At age 39, with a background in chemical engineering from Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado, he opened his first gym in Santo Amaro ().

Early Lessons Shape Future Vision

The first Bio Ritmo academy taught Corona valuable lessons through failure. His initial facility design proved flawed, requiring multiple renovations as he learned what customers actually wanted versus what he assumed they needed. A skiing accident that required extensive rehabilitation became a turning point. Spending entire days at his own gym during physical therapy, Corona immersed himself in the fitness environment and studied operations from the customer perspective ().

Bio Ritmo eventually found success in São Paulo’s premium segment. Corona relocated to Avenida Paulista, invested in renowned architects, and created high-end facilities that attracted affluent members. Other gym operators soon copied his focus on design and atmosphere. The dono da Smart Fit had proven he could build a successful fitness business.

Identifying the Market Gap

Despite Bio Ritmo’s success, Corona grew frustrated by Brazil’s low gym penetration rates. Only about 3% of Brazilians held gym memberships in the mid-2000s, compared to 14% in the United States. The vast majority of potential customers simply couldn’t afford premium gym fees.

Corona attended international fitness conferences, studying business models in the United States and Europe. At a 2008 Roundtable event in the U.S., he discovered the HVLP (High Value Low Price) concept—gyms offering quality facilities at significantly lower monthly fees. These budget operators achieved profitability through scale, standardization, and operational efficiency.

This discovery crystallized Corona’s vision. He could apply his engineering training to optimize gym operations, his Bio Ritmo experience to ensure quality, and scale economics to achieve affordable pricing. The combination would allow him to address the massive underserved market of Brazilians who wanted to exercise but couldn’t afford existing options.

Smart Fit Launch Disrupts Market

Smart Fit opened its first location in São Paulo in 2009, charging just R$50 per month—a fraction of Bio Ritmo’s premium prices. The facilities featured bright, modern design with Smart Fit’s signature yellow-and-black branding, quality equipment from manufacturers like Technogym, and streamlined operations focused on strength training and cardio ().

The model proved immediately popular. Edgard Corona opened locations in Porto Alegre, Brasília, and Rio de Janeiro within the first year. By 2011, Smart Fit operated 55 gyms across Brazil and had begun international expansion with its first Mexico City location.

Smart Fit’s rapid expansion required significant capital. Corona brought in Pátria Investimentos as a private equity partner in 2010, providing funding for faster growth. Additional strategic investors followed: Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC in 2014, and Canada Pension Plan Investments (CPPIB) in 2019.

Growth accelerated dramatically. The dono da Smart Fit expanded to Chile, Peru, Colombia, and eventually 15 countries across Latin America. Smart Fit’s successful July 2021 IPO on Brazil’s B3 exchange raised R$2.3 billion and saw first-day trading surge 35%. From a single gym in São Paulo to the largest fitness chain in Latin America, Edgard Corona’s journey demonstrates how identifying an underserved market segment and executing consistently can build an industry-defining company.
